Kirkstone selected for luxury hotels

Kirkstone is supplying Brathay Blue Black slate for two recently completed prestigious hotels: St Pancras Chambers in London and the St Regis in Osaka.

GA Design has used the Brathay Blue Black slate extensively in the St Regis Hotel in Osaka, the slate has created striking finishes for a number of areas including the flooring in the spa area in addition to a number of skirtings and cladding for the bar. The extensive use of this material in the hotel clearly demonstrates the quality and versatility of the stone.

RHWL, architects for the St Pancras Chambers carefully selected the slate for use in the massage rooms and shower areas of the hotel. The rustic image of slate is only one aspect of this durable and versatile material, the smooth honed finish, classic colours and lateral strength of the slate will adapt to any surface and situation. These qualities, together with the textured finishes, provide an ideal choice of stone that is sound under foot and will not fade or flake with wear.

Designers are particularly attracted to using Kirkstone slate which is extracted with considerable care from quarries in the Lake District, quarried since the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Brathay Blue Black is a hard sedimentary slate formed under intense pressure. Characterized by a fine golden thread, originally an iron pyrites deposit, this consistent and versatile slate exhibits a dense blue-black body of colour. The density of the Brathay Blue Black stone ensures that it is suitable for the most demanding applications both inside or out.
